Dear friends, I am delighted to present to you the 2011 Festival: 300 Years of New Music, a creative conversation between works of living and past composers. Damariscotta's own Salt Bay Chamberfest will be host to a number of premiere performances (U.S., World and New England premieres), drawing some of the world’s most prominent composers and performing musicians to our beautiful corner of Maine. This summer’s concerts will feature the music of contemporary composers Matthias Pintscher, Pierre Jalbert, Tamar Muskal and world-renowned composer/conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. They also include an abundance of classic works from Schubert, Handel, Beethoven, Brahms, Faure, Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Copland. As always, the music will be performed by some of the world’s finest musicians playing today--violinists Jennifer Koh and New York Philharmonic principal associate concertmaster Sheryl Staples; pianists Ignat Solzhenitsyn and 2011 Avery Fisher career grant winner Benjamin Hochman; the Johannes Quartet, and many others. When composer Esa-Pekka Salonen was in residence with the New York Philharmonic this winter, I had the opportunity to play for him his piece "Knock, Breathe, Shine," which will have its U.S. premiere at Salt Bay Chamberfest on August 16. Click here for a glimpse of our session together! In addition to our four series concerts at the Darrows Barn, you will have the unique opportunity to connect with living composers and performing musicians by attending any of our special educational events. They include open rehearsals, pre- and post- concert composer conversations, Composer's Corner chats at the Maine Coast Book Shop, masterclasses for young Maine musicians, and our free educational family concert, What is Chamber Music?, at the Lincoln Theater on August 20. This season, for the first time, we are thrilled to work with visual artist George Mason who is creating companion works of art for this year's Chamberfest. He will have works in the Darrows Barn and at his show, New Works by George Mason, which runs from August 16 to 27 in the farmhouse at Round Top. I look forward to seeing you in August!
